Clarification Request: Does Screenly Download Videos from Youtube?

Hello,
I installed Screenly OSE in a rpi.
Everything is working awesome.

I even used the Screenly blogpost to turn on/off the TV via HDMI CEC (and it’s an old TV!).

My doubt: When I am in screenly, and I click “Add Asset”, I put a youtube url in there.
Does screenly actually download the video (say with youtube-dl)?
Or does it get some video meta-data, and when the video’s schedule plays it Screenly streams the video from youtube?

Clarification would be mostly appreciated!

Spot on. It’s downloaded using youtube-dl behind the scenes. So no, it’s not streamed but rather cached.

Thank you @vpetersson !!!

Thank you for all the work you do.
Greatly appreciated.

Hi, related question… if we use a non-YT URL to play an mp4 video, does that get cached as well? Will the screenly API asset information show that? (i don’t have access to my device for a couple of days and wanted to ask this while I was thinking of it!)

Sorry should have replied on @vpetersson reply.
