Lagging when playing 1080p video on Raspberry pi3 B

Hello everyone!

I was using an older version of Screenly OSE (before Anthias) with a 1080p, 14mbps video that lasted 1 minute 30 seconds. I hadn’t kept up with updates, and eventually, my OS started causing Wi-Fi connection issues.

I decided to do a fresh installation with the latest version for the Raspberry Pi 3 B v1.2. So far, so good.

Unfortunately, the video that used to play smoothly now lags significantly. I tried tweaking the overclocking settings and the gpu_mem. If I remember correctly, I had to make these adjustments back in the day as well. However, with the latest version, I can’t seem to modify the config.txt file. After booting up, it reverts to its default values.

Please help!

@pika28, what Raspberry Pi OS version are you using (are you using the Bullseye or the Bookworm).

If you’re using the Bookworm (Debian 12), /boot/config.txt has been moved to /boot/firmware/config.txt. Have you tried setting dtoverlay to vc4-kms-v3d or vc4-fkms-v3d?

Hello
I’m having the same issue and my settings are what you have detailed here. I’m running a Pi3B with Bookworm.

Still freezing and lagging badly.

Any other thoughts?

Thank you.

@AlBoudreau, you can do any of the following to see if they work:

Manual optimization of videos (i.e., decreasing the resolution or the bitrate) can be integrated in Anthias in the future.
